Answer
A cold sore is a version of the herpes virus. It is different from the genital herpes virus but can be transmitted to the genitals if the facial herpes comes in contact with the genitals. It is important to be careful during a cold sore outbreak. Don't touch your lips and then touch your eyes or nose or genitals. These areas are the most prone to contracting herpes. You can also pass this virus to another person by touching the other person with the infected area.

Cold sores are very resilient. The herpes virus connects to your nerve system and attacks the infected area. The virus then goes into a state of hibernation before your immune system can attack it. This enables it to go undetected by your body and remain with you for your entire lifetime. Chicken pox is another form of herpes which remains in your body and can later resurrect as shingles when you are older.

Don't let this information frighten you. This is only a precaution so that you don't encounter anymore awkward situations in your life. Cold sores on your lips are embarrassing enough. With proper handling during an outbreak, you can limit your cold sores to only attacking your lips. You may be able to even prevent further outbreaks.

There are several treatments for cold sores. Here are the most effective remedies.

1. Abreva. This is an over-the-counter cream that attacks the herpes virus and shortens the time of an outbreak. It is best to apply Abreva at the initial tingling sensation of a cold sore, before it appears on your lip.

2. Valtrex. This is a prescription medication usually intended for genital herpes. It is sometimes subscribed for cold sores also. Talk to your general doctor or a specialist about possible prescription treatments.

3. Limit stress. Since the herpes virus is connected to your nervous system, a primary trigger of a cold sore outbreak is stress. Change your lifestyle to limit the amount of stress in your life. Practice stress relieving exercises such as meditation or yoga. A cold sore is often referred to as a worry wart. It is a visible sign that you are under physical or mental stress. A cold sore outbreak often causes a person to feel embarrassed which causes more stress and lengthens the time of the outbreak.

4. Ice. Sudden changes in weather places stress upon your body. Cold sores often attack in early spring and late fall when temperatures can change drastically from day to day. Intense cold usually helps to counteract an attack. When you feel the initial tingling sensation of a cold sore outbreak, press a piece of ice on your lip where you have the outbreaks. Let the ice touch your bare skin while you hold the ice with a clean cloth. Practice this 3 times per day with a new cloth until the cold sores have disappeared. If you catch it early, you can often eliminate an outbreak.

5. Chapstick. Keep your lips clean and moist. Don't allow your lips to chap or feel stress from the weather. Avoid allowing the cold sore to come in contact with saliva or water. After washing your face, towel dry the infected area thoroughly before applying Chapstick.

6. Sunscreen. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can trigger a herpes outbreak, even during the winter. Apply sunscreen to the areas affected by cold sores. This will help prevent possible outbreaks.

7. Keep your immune system strong. Herpes usually attacks when your immune system is the weakest. A cold sore outbreak can even be an early sign of another oncoming illness such as the flu or a cold. Eat a healthy diet and take Vitamin C. Get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

They would put the soft serve in the cone and then dip it in a tub of liquid coating and after a few seconds the liquid would harden into a shell. How do you make this at home. What do they even call it? I have no idea how to start looking.

Answer
Homemade Ice Cream Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe

Here are two different kinds of recipe for Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. The first is made with a custard base (eggs and cream) and the second is a 'quick' recipe ideal for kids!

Custard base recipe
Ingredients:
4 egg yolks, 1/2 pint (250ml) milk, 1/2 pint (250ml) double/heavy cream, 4 oz (100g) sugar or caster sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or according to taste - everyone's different!)

First of all scald the milk (bring slowly up to boiling point in a saucepan). Separately, mix together the egg yolks and sugar until thick. Pour into this the hot milk, whilst continuously stirring. Then pour the mixture back into the pan and heat gently, stirring until the custard thickens - DO NOT BRING TO THE BOIL OR IT WILL PROBABLY CURDLE. When you can see a film form over the back of your spoon it's time to remove the saucepan from the heat. Leave to cool. This is the custard base and one you can use in many other recipes. When the custard base is cold, stir in the cream and vanilla extract, then transfer the whole mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream recipe for kids (or anyone wanting something quick and delicious!)

Ingredients:
1/2 pint (250ml) single/light cream, small tin of condensed milk, 1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract (according to taste) Pour all ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix until smooth. Transfer the whole mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Ten points best answer.

Answer
I've got two.

I was at a Cold-Stone Creamery eating a "like it" size (the smallest they have... I can barely finish them, that ice-cream is so rich and filling!) This woman came in with a little girl, maybe 5 of 6. The little girl was screaming, singing, banging on the ice-cream case, running around the little shop and bumping into all the other customers, slapping her sticky hands on people and then banging into the walls and counter and basically behaving like a wild animal. The woman ordered herself a cup of ice cream then ordered this child... this tiny little itty bitty child... a "Gotta Have It!" size ice cream for just herself! That cup of ice-cream could feed a family of four and leave everyone feeling disgusted with themselves! Never yelled at the child... Instead, REWARDED the hyperactive child with a REDICULOUSLY UNHEALTHY amount of sugary ice-cream!!! I could NOT believe it!

The worst one was at a laundry-mat. Three women and a little four year old boy... the women were doing their laundry and I was doing mine, trying to listen to my music headphones. This child was running up and down the aisles, SCREAMING and hollering... the WHOLE TIME I was there (about an hour and a half). He was so loud I couldn't even listen to my iPod with the volume turned all the way up. He was climbing into dryer machines, slamming doors on the machines, picking things up and throwing them etc. Once in a while, one of the women would tell him to "come here!" and he would ignore her. Then... he touched the drinking fountain. Out of the blue, one woman grabbed him, hauled him up by his arm till he dangled from his shoulder and spanked him with NO EXPLANATION for why she was suddenly punishing him!! Then the kid sat with her for a bit and minutes later resumed his tirade screaming around the place. I was folding my laundry and next thing I know, this kid has hold of a push-cart and, running full-tilt, SLAMS IT INTO ME pinning me to the counter.
I screamed in pain and turned around, yelling, "HEY!" at the kid to let him know he'd hurt me.

Three angry women DESCENDED on me! "DON'T YOU YELL AT HIM! HE JUST 4! HE DON'T KNOW NO BETTA!" and I could no longer bite my tongue, still in pain from having been pinned to the counter. I said, in a low voice, "That's because nobody ever TELLS him any better!"

They spent the rest of my time there making comments about my clothes and assumptions about my sex life. (ie: "She just mad cuz she ain't got no man...")

People like that should not be allowed near children.

I'm looking for a recipe for making it at home in this part of the world it's hard to come by, they have, but it's commercial from the western part of the USA Thank you ahead of time!!

Answer
I remember my busia, mother and aunts making Polish biaÅa kieÅbasa (BEEYAH-wah keeyehw-BAH-sah) or white sausage every year for Easter and Christmas. It was an all-day job. The hog casings were rinsed and soaked to rid them of their salt, and the pork was cut by hand and stuffed into the casings using a metal funnel. The house was perfumed with the aroma of garlic for days.Today, we have the luxury of electric meat grinders and extruders, making this a very simple process.Every family has its own recipe. This is the way my family likes it.
Ingredients:

14 feet hog casings, rinsed three times
4 pounds boneless, well-marbled pork shoulder, cut according to your grinder's directions
1/2 cup cold water
2 cloves garlic, crushed in press
4 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon marjoram

Preparation:

After rinsing hog casings, store in refrigerator until ready to use.

In a small bowl, mix water, garlic, salt, pepper and marjoram and set aside.

Cold meat grinds more easily, so keep the meat refrigerated until ready to grind. Coarsely grind the meat in a hand-cranked or electric grinder. Place meat in large bowl.

Combine water-spice mixture with meat until thoroughly incorporated. To make sure the seasonings are just right, fry a small patty and taste. Some people like to refrigerate the meat mixture, covered, overnight before stuffing so it flavors, but that's not necessary.

Remove casings from refrigerator and knot one end. Lightly coat the stuffing funnel with cooking spray. Slip the other end of the casing over the mouth of the funnel. Continue to push remainder of casing up onto funnel until you have reached the knot.

Begin to force the meat into the casing with one hand while using the other hand to control the thickness of the sausage as it is extruded.

Remember, the sausage will shrink when it cooks, so you want a nice plump sausage. But be careful you don't overstuff or the casing will burst.

Keep extruding until the casing is used up. Tie a knot in that end. You can either leave the sausage in a large coil or twist it at 6-inch intervals to make links.

Store refrigerated and covered up to two days until ready to cook. Before cooking, prick sausage along the length of the link to allow air bubbles to escape. Otherwise they will explode in the cooking water.

Place sausage in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 1 hour (45 minutes if you also brown in the oven).

Some people like to brown their cooked sausage in a 350-degree oven for about 20 minutes, turning frequently.

Remove to a serving platter and enjoy with homemade horseradish known as "chrzan." When the horseradish is flavored with beets, it's called "cwikla."

Don't throw away the cooking liquid. Save it to make a soup known as white "barszcz."

Freeze uncooked or cooked sausage for up to 6 months.

popza

Are foods like biltong, liver bad for the unborn baby or for the mother?

Answer
Here is a list of foods that the FDA and the American Pediactric and Gynecological Associations says can be harmful aand should not be eaten by pregnant women:

Raw Meat: Uncooked seafood and rare or undercooked beef or poultry should be avoided because of the risk of contamination with coliform bacteria, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella.

Deli Meat: Deli meats ( including Hot dogs) have been known to be contaminated with Listeria, which can cause miscarriage. Listeria has the ability to cross the placenta and may infect the baby leading to infection or blood poisoning, which may be life-threatening. If you are pregnant and you are considering eating deli meats, make certain that you reheat the meat until it is steaming.

Fish with Mercury: Fish that contain high levels of mercury should be avoided. Mercury consumed during pregnancy has been linked to developmental delays and brain damage. A sample of these types of fish include: shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish. Canned, chunk light tuna generally has less amounts of mercury than other tuna, but still should only be eaten in moderation. Certain types of fish used in sushi should also be avoided due to high levels of mercury. Please see Mercury in Fish for specific types of fish and further information on how to calculate mercury levels.

Smoked Seafood -Refrigerated, smoked seafood often labed as lox, nova style, kippered, or jerky should be avoided because they could be contaminated with Listeria. (These are safe to eat when they are in an ingredient in meal that has been cooked like a casserole.) This type of fish is often found in the deli section or regrigereated section. Canned or shelf-safe smoked seafood is ok to eat.

Fish exposed to Industrial Pollutants: Avoid fish from contaminated lakes and rivers that may be exposed to high levels of polychlorinated biphyenyls. This is primarily for those who fish in local lakes and streams. These fish include: blue fish, striped bass, salmon, pike, trout, and walleye. Contact the local health department or Environmental Protection Agency to determine which fish are safe to eat in your area. Remember, this is regarding fish caught in local waters and not fish from your local grocery store.

Raw Shellfish: The majority of seafood borne illness is caused by undercooked shellfish, which include oysters, clams, and mussels. Cooking helps prevent some types of infection, but it does not prevent the algae-related infections that are associated with red tides. Raw shellfish pose concern for everybody and they should be avoided altogether during pregnancy.

Raw Eggs: Raw eggs or any foods that contain raw eggs should be avoided because of the potential exposure to salmonella. Some homemade Caesar dressings, mayonnaise, homemade ice cream or custards, and Hollandaise sauces may be made with raw eggs.

*** Commercially manufactured ice cream, dressings and eggnog are made with pasteurized eggs and do not increase the risk of salmonella. Restauants also should be using pasteurized eggs in any recipe that is made with raw eggs, such as Hollandaise sauce or dressings. ***

Soft Cheeses: Imported soft cheeses may contain bacteria called Listeria, which can cause miscarriage. Listeria has the ability to cross the placenta and may infect the baby leading to infection or blood poisoning, which can be life-threatening. You would need to avoid soft cheeses such as : brie, camembert, Roquefort, feta, gorgonzola and Mexican style cheeses that include queso blanco and queso fresco, unless they clearly state that they are made from pastuerized milk. All soft non-imported cheeses made with pasteurized milk are safe to eat.

Unpasteurized Milk: Unpasteurized milk may contain bacteria called Listeria, which can cause miscarriage. Listeria has the ability to cross the placenta and may infect the baby leading to infection or blood poisoning, which can be life-threatening. Make sure that any milk that you drink is pasteurized.

Pate: Refrigereated pate or meat spreads should be avoided because it may contain the bacteria Listeria. Canned pate, or shelf-safe meat spreads can be eaten.

Caffeine: Although most studies show that caffeine intake in moderation is okay, there are others that show that caffeine intake may be related to miscarriages. Avoid caffeine during the first trimester to reduce the likelihood of a miscarriage. As a general rule, caffeine should be limited to fewer than 300 mg per day during pregnancy. Caffeine is a diuretic, which means it helps eliminate fluids from the body. This can result in water and calcium loss. It is important that you are drinking plenty of water, juice, and milk rather than caffeinated beverages. Some research shows that large amounts of caffeine are associated with miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, and withdrawal symptoms in infants. The safest thing is not to consume caffeine.

Alcohol: There is NO amount of alcohol that is known to be safe during pregnancy, and therefore alcohol should be avoided during pregnancy. Prenatal exposure to alcohol can interfere with the healthy development of the baby. Depending on the amount, timing, and pattern of use, alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or other developmental disorders. If you consumed alcohol before you knew you were pregnant, stop drinking now. Alcohol should continue to be avoided during breastfeeding. Exposure to alcohol as an infant poses harmful risks, and alcohol does reach the baby during breastfeeding.

Unwashed Vegetables: Yes, vegetables are safe to eat, so you still need to eat them. However, it is essential to make sure they are washed to avoid potential exposure to toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis may contaminate the soil where the vegetables were grown.

I have tried all the cheap walmart brands ranging from $30-some to $70-some dollars. I have tried these over the last 4-5 years. I have yet to find a good one. What do I mean by "good one"? One that will crush ice for smoothies, will emolsify dressings, will actually puree, and that doesn't get stuck all the time. When I was a kid I had no problem using whatever blender my mom had.. very old. I have also worked in restaurants and have had no problem with professional models. Is there a tried and true "good one" out there for under $100?? I love to make fresh sauces and salsas and puree soups etc and I have been nothing but disappointed with inexpensive blenders. I wonder why are they even on the shelf? help -- TIA!

Answer
The Cuisinart blender is my favourite. I got it for about $85 (Canadian) had it for 6 years and it just died. And I abused that thing- I dropped it a few times, I often pureed thick mixtures, and soups, made smoothies every day, crushed ice for cocktails, etc. Then I threw it in the dishwasher hundreds of times.

I got another cheaper 650 watt Black and Decker model-about $50 at Costco- it was horrible. It strained and shook to crush ice cubes and puree things, and it completely conked out after a week. I'm getting another Cuisinart, same model- the power of that thing was awesome, and even on the day it died the blades were still sharp. I got it at Sears, and I'm going back there to buy again. I've heard that the KitchenAid one is fantastic, it's what all the chefs on the Food Network use, but you will pay a lot more.

YUM! I love a float with cream soda. We have a red cream soda where I live, and it's really good. Just use vanilla ice cream. Put some cold soda in the glass, then some ice cream, more soda, more ice cream, layering it as you go. Stick a straw and an iced tea spoon into it and devour.

Flavored ice cream might work, but the flavors might just clash.

Answer
HOME-MADE ICE CREAM

2 cups milk
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 cups light cream
3 tablespoons vanilla extract
1 5-pound bag rock salt
Crushed ice

Assemble ingredients. Heat the milk on low just until
bubbles appear around the side of the saucepan. Add the
sugar and salt and stir until both are thoroughly
dissolved. Stir in the cream and vanilla extract. Chill
the mixture in the refrigerator about 1 hour.

Pour the mixture into an ice-cream maker and process.
(Old-fashioned manually operated ice-cream makers can
be found at kitchen supply stores or by calling a
manufacturer such as Rival/White Mountain Freezer,
800-343-0065.) Makes approximately 2 quarts.

Make sure the dasher (the double-sided blade of your
ice-cream maker) is securely in place. Pour in the
chilled mixture to fill 2/3 of the can, leaving room
for expansion. Put on the lid and attach the cranking
mechanism.

Pour finely crushed ice around the can, covering the
bottom 3 inches of the tub.

Sprinkle the ice with rock salt. Then alternate layers
of crushed ice and salt until the tub is filled
(ideally, you want a 5:1 ratio of ice to salt). Do not
cover the top of the can. Add cold water to help the
ice melt and avoid ice jams.

Crank the handle for 20 to 30 minutes, adding more ice
and salt as chips melt. As you crank, the dasher mixes
air into the thickening ice cream, preventing the
mixture from becoming an ice block.

When cranking becomes harder, pull the dasher out of
the can and check the ice cream. Keep cranking if it is
still runny. Homemade ice cream should have a soft
consistency.

To make the ice cream a little harder, plug the hole in
the top of the can and leave it in the tub or in your
freezer for a few minutes before serving. Ice cream
hardened in a home freezer loses some of its
creaminess, so plan on eating it up right away when
it's at its best.

CHOCOLATE CHIP ICE CREAM
Add 10 cups of chocolate chips to the ice cream just
before you finish cranking it, about 20 minutes into
the process.

BERRY GOOD ICE CREAM
Chop or mash strawberries, blueberries, or other
fruits. Toss with sugar and refrigerate while you
prepare the ice cream. After the ice cream has
stiffened, drain the juice from the berries and add
them to the can for the final cranks. A family
favorite is strawberry ice cream with a few handfuls of
semi-sweet chocolate chips thrown in.

GETTING IT RIGHT
Chill your mixture in the refrigerator for at least 1
hour before processing.

Turn the dasher steadily--too quickly and it won't
scoop the frozen ice cream off the side.

Keep the ice cream cold at all times for the creamiest
consistency. Melting and refreezing turns the mixture
icy.

The colder your add-ins are, the quicker you can finish
freezing your ice cream.

Answer
Ice Cream in a Bag

Milk can become ice cream in five minutes! This homemade ice cream in a bag is a summertime delight for kids and adults alike.

What you'll need:
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup milk or half & half
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
6 tablespoons rock salt
1 pint-size Ziploc plastic bag
1 gallon-size Ziploc plastic bag
Ice cubes
How to make it:
Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
Place the small bag inside the large one and seal again carefully.
Shake until mixture is ice cream, about 5 minutes.
Wipe off top of small bag, then open carefully and enjoy!
Tips:

To make a larger amount, try doubling the recipe. Anything larger might be too big for kids to pick-up, because the ice itself is quite heavy.

Here's an improvised version from another parent:

1/4 tsp butternut flavored imitation vanilla
1 tbs. sugar
1/2 cup 1% milk
Ziploc sandwich bag
12 water softener pellets
1 tray of ice (Mine breaks it into small pieces and it is really only about half tray)
Large plastic bag (I didn't have a ziploc.)

Put the ice cream ingredients in the small bag and then put it, salt and ice in the big bag. Hold the bag shut and sort of stir it around on the floor for about 5 minutes. Although the salt pellets hardly dissolved , I got ice cream. It was not as smooth as ice cream, probably because of the low-fat milk -- it was a little like sherbet. I'd recommend wearing gloves. It is incredible that it is ready in 5 minutes (not counting assembling the ingredients.)

A tablespoon of cocoa, a tablespoon of sugar, and a cup of milk. I really wanted to use carob but we didn't have any. It was a tad too chocolate, but good! If you have milk allergies, I suggested you try this with fruit juice. You can use straight pineapple juice and get terrific fruit sorbet.

They also have asoccer ball to make it

Or:
1 cup whole milk

1 cup half and half

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup sugar

about 2 pounds of ice

1 cup coarse salt

water

1 quart-sized baggie that seals

1 gallon-sized baggie that seals

mixing bowl

mixing spoon

duct tape

towel

bowls and spoons for serving ice cream

Here's what you have to do:
1.Get ready 4 some fun

2. In a bowl, mix 1 cup whole milk, 1 cup half and half, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and 1/2 cup sugar.

3. Pour the mixture into a quart-sized baggie.

4. Squeeze out the excess air and seal the baggie with duct tape so it doesn't leak.

5. Put the quart-sized baggie into the gallon-sized baggie and fill it in with ice, water, and about 1 cup coarse salt. Adding salt to the ice helps make the ice cream get colder, faster.

6. Squeeze the air out of the big baggie and seal it closed with duct tape so that the baggie won't leak.

7. Now, gently toss the baggie up and down for about 10 minutes. You can take turns with a friend. You should use a towel so that your hands don't freeze.

8. Cut a corner off of the quart-sized baggie and squeeze the ice cream out into a bowl.
