What wood preservatives would you use on wet wood on a wooden boat? By wet I mean that the vessel's hull is wet daily so the saturation point of the wood would be at the top of the scale.
I have heard the in the UK cuprinol is very good and can be painted over, I have also read in older publications that red oxide paint is very good as well both on metal an on wood. Any ideas?
Answer
yep, red oxide, and good ol' Cuprinol........anything with copper in it......
there are some modern wood preservatives that are tin, penta or TBTO based.....I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole
there are outdoor wood deck treatments in the States made by Water Seal....NOT the thing you want to use in a boat...
and surprisingly very effective and a cost of zero is good old salt water......bucket the decks; fill the bilges, spray it around wherever you can, put rock salt ( the stuff you use to melt ice on roads, but make sure it's JUST salt ) in all the odd corners and places fresh water might go.....
