1.Does this product actually work? (as in does it eliminate the fleas)
2.Does it need to be combined with any other product to eliminate fleas on the animal itself? (I.e shampoos, flea collars)

Answer
Personally, I have no idea, but I wouldn't use it as I'd have to doubt it could pick up all of the eggs and larvae.

I have another suggestion, though, if you need help with fleas. I don't know if you're just asking out of curiosity or if you actually have a flea problem. Anyway, Capstar and Program:

http://www.1800petmeds.com/Program+Oral+Suspension-prod10020.html

"Capstar is a tablet used to kill fleas on dogs and cats, which begins working within 30 minutes."
"Program contain lufenuron. Lufenuron is an insect development inhibitor which breaks the flea life cycle by inhibiting egg development."

Lufenuron targets chitin - Chitin is a polysaccharide found in the outer skeleton of insects, crabs, shrimps, and lobsters and in the internal structures of other invertebrates. Mammals don't have chitin, so it's safe and very effective.
Capstar I'd only suggest if you have an infestation, mostly since it looks like you're trying to avoid chemical alternatives. But there's very few adverse effects noted and it wears off after 24 hours, so if you need immediate help, it can do it.

And, for the record, flea collars don't work well on fleas AND they're toxic to pets. Try to avoid.
