home made ice cream. vanilla ice cream...

Answer
Ben & Jerry's French Vanilla (from their book which I checked out from the library)
2 large eggs
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups heavy or whipping cream
1 cup milk
2 tsp vanilla extract

Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy (1-2 minutes). Whisk in the sugar, a little at a time, then continue whisking until completely blended (about 1 minute more). Pour in the cream, milk and vanilla extract, whisk to blend.
Transfer the mixture to an ice cream maker and freeze following the manufacturer's instructions.
Makes 1 quart

(edit: Personally our family finds this particular recipe to be too fatty, where it leaves grease on the roof of your mouth? So we recommend doing 1 cup whipping cream, 1 cup half & half and 1 cup milk - or substituting even a little more milk for the cream)

An ice cream maker would be nice, but isn't absolutely necessary.
You can make small amounts by hand with common household items. Here are a couple of methods:

1. Pour ice cream mixture into a sandwich sized zip lock baggie (about half full). Put the small zip lock bag along with a 2-3 cups of ice and about a 1/8th of a cup of salt into a gallon sized zip lock bag and a tablespoon of cold water. Gently squish the inner bag around using the ice in the outer bag... this can be soft serve ice cream in as little as 10 minutes.

2. Pour ice cream mixture into a clean 1lb coffee can with a tight fitting lid, set this can in the center of a 2lb coffee can with a tight fitting lid. All around the inner can alternate a layer of ice then sprinkle liberally with salt, then another layer of ice and more salt until the can is full. Put the lid on the bigger can and begin rolling the large can around (fun for kids to roll back and forth between them), I'd say roll it around for 15-20 minutes and you'll have ice cream!
