Answer
There are lots of different ice cream makers out there...lots of different options.
I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker and I love it. Cuisinart consistently gets good ratings by their customers.
I make ice cream about once every week so my ice cream maker gets a good workout! It's 2 years old now!
Cuisinart offers commercial quality ice cream makers as well as cheaper ice cream makers that produce great ice cream - but maybe not quite up to commercial ice cream quality.
The commercial quality ice cream makers do produce a better ice cream. They're able to freeze the ice cream more consistently. This produces a softer more ...well...commercial ice cream texture! The lower end ice cream makers do make great ice cream though.
So I guess it comes down to - when you eat ice cream how picky are you? and how often do you think you will make ice cream? If you want to make high quaility ice cream that rivals Ben and Jerry's or if you plan on making a lot of ice cream - I'd go for the more expensive ice cream makers - Cuisinart or even Lello if you're really serious about ice cream making.
If any ice cream tastes good to you and if you only plan to make ice cream every once an a while a cheaper ice cream maker will do you just fine and you'll be very very happy with it!
The ice cream makers that don't have a freezer bowl have the added bonus of being able to make continual batches of ice cream without having to wait for your freezer bowl to refreeze inbetween batches. Just another thing to think about when choosing an ice cream maker.
Cuisinart ice cream makers are a great choice!
Here's a site that aids in choosing an ice cream maker - giving crucial questions to ask when buying an ice cream maker, ice cream maker pros and cons, and the basics on the different types of ice cream makers.
