I would like to do a lil something for my wife this Mother's Day.....and I thought why not get her a nice pre-made ice cream cake from Walmart? I get groceries there using food stamps that we're so blessed to receive....and thought this would be a good idea, Please let me know!

Answer
I'm not sure you can buy prepared food like that. May vary state to state, and may have changed since I knew more about the program. Check your state's website to be sure. That would be kind of embarrassing. I'm pretty sure the guidelines aren't as strict as WIC where you can only buy certain foods with it. But I think prepared deli foods are not allowed. Bakery cakes, rotisserie chickens, ready made potato salad...stuff like that. It's crazy because you can go across the store to the frozen food section and buy a frozen dessert, or fully cooked meat, or any number of ready to eat side dishes from the dairy case. But if they prepared it in the store, it was never allowed. These kind of guidelines are meant to keep people from abusing the system, but you see there are a lot of ways around it, and none of it is really supportive of proper nutrition. I kind of dislike the whole way it is set up. Deli foods prepared at the store are often a little better than those trucked in with all kinds of stabilizers and preservatives. They expect their food to be eaten in a couple days or they throw it out...so much better for everyone. Plus you are paying someone local to make the food instead of sending your money to a factory who knows where? Government programs often suck for reasons like this.

Sorry..soapbox moment. Anyway, if you can't get the item you want, you can use your food stamps to buy the ingredients to make her a cake or buy a frozen dessert from the regular freezer section. There may be an ice cream cake there! It is sweet to want to do something nice for her on Mother's Day!

I guess you can. Says you can't buy HOT food or food you will be eating in the store. So...just don't have your party there in the store...hahhah! Here is the link to that:
