So the other day i used my icecream maker for the second time. The first time used it i made frozen yogurt and i washed it out and put it back in the freezer with a plastic bag inside so frost wouldnt grow in the tub. Well i made some vanilla ice cream with snickers pieces and when it was done i tasted good. I put it in a air tight container and stuck it in the freezer till the next day. The following day i noticed a strange chemical taste but blew it off. The following day i ate more and it tasted more chemically. I finally threw it out yesterday ( after only 4 days) because it was disgusting. Do you think its the tub or is it maybe that my freezer is set to high ( i found some frost on the icecream) and its makeing my ice cream taste rancid. I never had this problem with store bought ie cream.

Answer
It sounds more like it's picking up smells from the other foods. Anytime you make ice cream, put a piece of wax paper down solidly on TOP of the ice cream itself... it will seal off the top of the product and keep other smells from being picked up. Then put the regular cover on it too, so the only air space will be between the top cover and the wax paper.

I'm getting an icecream maker. As a complete novice, I would appreciate some delicious, easy, vegan, and cheap recipes (I can't afford to splurge on fresh strawberries etc). Thanks for your help!

Answer
i grabbed this from the PPk website :D

Equipment:
- Blender or food processor
- Ice cream machine (the kind with the tub you chill in the freezer works fine, and they cost less than $50)

Ingredients
1 tetra box firm silken tofu (like Mori-Nu) -or- 8 ounces soy yogurt
Between 3/4 to 1 cup plain soy milk
1/3 cup maple syrup or brown rice syrup (or a combination)
2 tsp vanilla

Directions
Combine all 4 main ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until thoroughly combined and smooth. Blend in any desired flavoring ingredients (see below). Pour into your ice cream machine, and freeze following the manufacturer's instructions.

Add-ins:
For various flavors, add to the food processor:

For Banana Soy Ice Cream, blend in 2 ripe bananas

For Strawberry Soy Ice Cream, blend in 12-16 frozen and partially thawed strawberries.

For Pineapple Soy Ice Cream, blend in 1 can or 1 cup of pineapple (well drained). You may want more sweetener.

For Ginger Soy Ice Cream, add either 1/4 cup preserved ginger or 1 to 2 inches grated fresh ginger (for preserved ginger, add to food processor so it gets ground up).

Use your imagination to come up with new flavors!

Flavored liquers or syrups are a great way to add punch. Try creme de menthe and chocolate chips, or coffee liqueur, or instant coffee powder...

not too hard to make at all ;)

here is a recipe for plain vanilla vegan ice cream from the vegan chef website

i hope you have fun making all the ice cream :D

VINEET S

Please explain why we put the common salt on the road blocked due to snowfall and icecream makers mix the salt in ice in their boxes so that the icecreams do not melt why? what is the difference in both?

Answer
When salt is mixed with a liquid, (generally) it lowers the melting point. A liquid which freezes normally at say 0 degrees, will freeze at say -2 degrees.
When salt mixed water is frozen, it freezes at a very low temp. So it takes to much heat to rise its temp, and it remains frozen for a long time.
When salt is spread on snow, it lowers the melting point.
But the temp of atmosphere is constant, so the snow melts faster, at low temp only.
